Varicose Veins

Varicose Veins

Varicose veins are larger than normal veins that are gnarled and twisted in shape. Specifically, these veins are larger than three millimeters in diameter. They are usually also significantly thicker than normal veins and bulge out of the skin. While any vein can become varicose, it most commonly occurs in leg veins. This is largely due to the pressure that standing and walking puts on the veins of the lower body. While varicose veins are sometimes only cause for aesthetic concerns, they can also be a sign of more serious circulatory problems. While it’s not entirely understood why some people develop varicose veins and others don’t, the tendency to develop them has been shown to be at least partially tied to genetics.

Spider Veins

Spider Veins

Spider veins are small dilated blood vessels that look like a red and blue webs. These veins are very similar to varicose veins, but are smaller and closer to the surface of the skin. They most often occur in areas behind the knee, but can often appear anywhere on the body. Like varicose veins, spider veins are also formed because of increased pressure in the veins. The tendency to develop spider veins is also at least partially hereditary.
